Perceived Norms vs. Actual Norms Activity
This is an activity that is used to show how teens' perceived norms differ from the actual norms. High school students were asked what percentage of teenagers they think have used certain substances in the last 30 days. Students put down their answers on the small papers and post them on the board, starting with 0% on the left to 100% on the right. Their guesses fall all over the place as seen here. This is their perception. They perceive that "all teens" or most teens participate in these behaviors. Then the actual norms come out. I share with them the data from the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which are the larger papers on the board. These numbers are lower than what they guessed. The reality is that less teens are using drugs, drinking alcohol, and using tobacco than what teens think. The majority of teens DON'T participate in these behaviors and this is one way I try to show them that!

Heroin in the Heartland
In the fall of 2015, 60 Minutes aired an episode titled 'Heroin in the Heartland'. The short documentary centered around the heroin epidemic right here in Ohio. Teens' families from central Ohio were interviewed and shared their stories of their children and their addiction to heroin. Some kids started with prescription painkillers from injuries and others started with other drugs and wanted something "fun" to do. Here is the preview below and the actual video can be found on the CBS 60 Minutes website for members only. Mrs. Cole has a subscription to the video. If anyone is interested in watching, please contact Mrs. Cole!
