MyPlate Activity
Students have to search through food advertisements and find foods that fall under the 5 MyPlate food categories. This is a fun way for them to learn and ask questions about which foods fall under which categories.
Eat This, Not That Project
Students pick a popular restaurant that they have access to the nutritional information form their menu. They then pick two meals, one healthy and one unhealthy. They compare the number of calories, the amount of sodium, and the amount of fat in each meal. In one example below, a student chose two different restaurants, but still chose a healthy vs. unhealthy meal.
Nutrition Learning Centers
Mrs. Cole's Learning Centers for Nutrition were a big hit at the 2015 OAHPERD Convention. There are 5 stations including Nutrition Vocabulary, Choose This, Not That, What's in the Bag?, Rethink Your Drink, and MyPlate Maker. Students rotate through the stations and complete the task in the folders.

Battle of the Snacks Activity
7th graders get to choose a typical junk food type snack or bring their own snack. They copy the food label onto their worksheet and circle nutrients that they think make their food healthy and highlight nutrients that they think make their food unhealthy. Students then pair up and talk about which food is healthier and why. They have to use information from their label to support their choice. We talk through their choices as a class and then pick the top 5 to compare as a class. We go through and pick a winner of the 'Battle of the Snacks' based on calories, total fat, saturated fat, sugar and sodium. This activity is a fun way for kids to practice label reading, pick out nutrients to limit, and realize that junk food typically has a lot of calories, sugar, fat and sodium!
